Every conversation I have with growers across South Africa tells the same story: farming has never been harder, yet the opportunities in front of us have never been bigger. Our farmers’ resilience remains one of this sector’s greatest strengths. But resilience on its own won’t be enough to secure agriculture’s future.

South African agriculture is operating in an increasingly complex environment. Rising input costs, infrastructure constraints, logistics challenges and global market volatility are all placing real pressure on producers. At the same time, local growers are up against growing competition from imports, even as they work to hold their ground in key export markets. Working hard has never been the issue for South African farmers. What our industry needs now is continuous investment in innovation, productivity and long-term sustainability.

Climate variability is becoming harder to ignore, and the prospect of El Niño conditions this coming season is a timely reminder of just how exposed agriculture remains to the weather. Hotter temperatures, less rainfall and tightening water constraints all add pressure to crop production. South African farmers are no strangers to adversity, but shifting climatic conditions are changing the way growers plan, decide and manage risk, season after season.

This is where genetics have a critical part to play, and where we believe Hazera can make a real difference. Behind every variety we bring to market is an extensive international R&D network – four R&D centres and eight breeding stations located in key agricultural and horticultural regions around the world, supported by our collaboration with research institutes, universities and breeding-technology partners, and by the wider research strength of the Limagrain Group. This global footprint allows us to test how our varieties perform in different local environments long before they reach a grower’s field.

But global science only delivers its full value when it is grounded locally. Combining international expertise with local knowledge and the practical experience of our farmers here in South Africa enables us to provide high-quality, efficient solutions that maximise value for the farmer. We’re focused on developing varieties that hold up under changing and often unpredictable conditions – genetics built for resilience, adaptability and consistent performance across diverse growing environments. Whether growers are facing drought stress, heat pressure, disease pressure or shifting market demands, strong genetics are becoming one of the most valuable tools they have to protect both productivity and profitability.

We also believe South Africa’s regulatory environment needs to keep pace with innovation. Robust seed regulations matter – they protect quality, safeguard growers and build confidence across the industry. At the same time, policy needs to encourage investment in research and give farmers timely access to the improved technologies that will keep them competitive on the world stage.

Food security remains one of South Africa’s most urgent priorities. Agriculture has the potential to be a powerful driver of economic growth, employment and rural development, but getting there will take collaboration across the whole value chain, and a shared commitment to innovation from every one of us.

Despite the challenges ahead, we remain optimistic. South African farmers have shown time and again that they can adapt and succeed against the odds.
